SOFT WIND SHELLS
Soft Wind Shells is an audiovisual exploration that delves into the dynamics of transmission and echo, weaving a narrative that captures the essence of communication and the inevitable distortions that occur through each act of transmission. The film draws inspiration from two classic children’s games — ‘Telephone’ and ‘Ik ga op reis en ik neem mee…’ — to illustrate the fluidity and fragility of communication.
In one, a sentence is passed through whispers, the players inevitably changing the sentence when they misunderstand or forget the correct words. What is left of the sentence once it reaches the other end? ‘A long time ago, a sparrow flapped its wings…’
In the other, a chain of objects needs to be formed, a packing list for a trip. Each player repeats all the items that have come before them and adds a new one. ‘A bathing suit, a camera, flowers, a car…’
The visuals depict abstract representations of sound waves, echoing patterns, and fragmented images that shift and morph as they are transmitted from one frame to the next. The audio component, layered with whispers, echoes, and distortions, mirrors the organic evolution of the original messages.
Shown as part of Lisa Longworth’s Prille Liefde: The Fabric of Their Echo at the invitation of At Rise Of Curtain at Het Entrepot in Brugge (BE), July ’24. Shown at the Open Screen at Cinema Nova in Brussels (BE), December ’24. Part of the screening programme ‘Listen, Shift, Feel’ during Scarborough Film Festival (UK), March ’25 and the official selection of New Jersey International Film Festival (US), June ’25, where it got an honourable mention in the category Experimental Film. Screened in August ’25 at Garage Rotterdam as part of the Sweet Scope studio curated group show ‘Language(s)’.
